LAKAGÍGAR (LAKI CRATERS)Lakagígar (Laki craters) is a series of craters that were formed in one of the world's largest mixed eruptions in recorded history. Now referred to as the Fires of the River Skaftá (or Laki eruption), this continuous series of eruptions emitted a vast quantity of lava and substantial amounts of volcanic ash from a fissure stretching 25 km across the area west of the ice cap.
The eruption began on 8th of June 1783 at the south-west end of the fissure. Lava flowed across the flat land destroying a large number of farms, stopping just outside the small town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur on 20th of July. The north-east part of the fissure then erupted. From 29th of July until well into October, lava flowed along the course of the River Hverfisfljót and across the countryside on both banks. Although volcanic activity then began to subside, the eruption was not finally over until February 1784.
The total area of the resulting lava field is 565 km² and the estimated volume of volcanic material is over 12 km³.
MossesNowhere else in Iceland are mosses as prominent as in the highlands southwest of Vatnajökull ice cap. Mosses have virtually no roots and absorb rainwater and nutrients through their small leaves. They therefore have an advantage over flowering plants where precipitation is high and the ground is poor in nutrients. Walking on moss can kill it, and then it does not re-grow in the same place. Please assist us to protect the area by only walking on the marked and posted paths around the Laki crater row.
How to get thereThe road to the Laki craters (F 206) leaves the main road (road nr. 1) by the farm Hunkubakkar, just south of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Distance is about 50 km, but traveling time should be estimated about 2 hrs, one way.More geosites in the neighbourhood: www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is
SKAFTÁRELDAHRAUN (ELDHRAUN LAVA FIELDS)
The Skaftá-Fires are one of two of the largest lava flows that have occurred on Earth in reocrded history. The lava flow, which flowed from the Laki vent, fell into two main streams to inhabited areas, on each side of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. For the eight months during the eruption, 12 km3 of basalt lava flowed onto the surface and covered about 565 km2 of land or about a half percent of Iceland’s area. Skaftá-Fires lava field is classified as smooth or pāhoehoe lava. There are a number of lava caves in the field. All around thick woolly fringe moss forms a continuous layer which gives off a grey colour when dry, but a beautiful green after rain.

Blue Hotel Fagrilundur
Blue Hotel Fagrilundur is a new 40-room hotel in Reykholt in Biskupstungur.
All rooms have a private bathroom with a shower and a refrigerator with a freezer in each room so our guests can cool their own beverages and other groceries. There is no traditional bar in the hotel, although we will have wine and beer in a minimal selection to begin with. We also have hot tubs for relaxing after your busy day experiencing our wonderful country. That facility will be open from 15-21: 30. To begin with, we will only have breakfast (continental) at the hotel itself as we are in good partnership with restaurants on both sides of us, which are both within a (very short) walking distance.
Mika’s restaurant is just across the street and is open daily for dinner. We recommend that our guests book a table well in advance. This can be done on their website or by phone 486 1110. See www.mika.is. Friðheimar and Vínstofa Friðheima - Winebar & Bistro is also almost next door to us, an enjoyable restaurant inside the greenhouse, and you can enjoy lunch there from 12-4 PM every day. We recommend booking a table well in advance at Friðheimar by phone 486 8894 or at fridheimar@fridheimar.is. See more at www.fridheimar.is.
Next to Mika is a mini market and gas station, Bjarnabúð, where you can find an excellent selection of products for such a small shop, and there you can also get hot dogs, sandwiches, ice cream, and petrol, to name a few.
The hotel is based on a so-called “self-check-in” system with smart locks where our guests receive a code to access the front door and room when booking. The door to each room has a doorknob with a number lock that is electronically connected to the booking system, and the code is valid during your stay. It should be both simple and convenient to stay with us. No keys, no cards. Just remember the numbers or look at them on the phone and stamp them on the doorknob. We will welcome you in person until 10 PM each night if you prefer a more traditional check-in. Also, a short distance from our hotel is the Aratunga community center, and there you find a gym, swimming pool, and hot tubs. Geysir, Laugarvatn, Flúðir, Gullfoss, Þingvellir, and other suitable places are nearby. In fact, we are located in the center of the Golden Circle.

Arnanes
Arnanes Country Hotel is a family-run company, established in May 1993 in our own home, located in Nesjahverfi, 1,5 km from Arnanes. In August 1993 we bought a part of the farm Arnanes (30 ha of land and 2 houses) and early spring 1994 we moved our home to Arnanes.
Our former home then became a guesthouse and still it is a part of our hotel with 5 rooms, a sitting room and living rooms, complimentary coffee and tea,TV and free internet access just like in all of our rooms.
1995 we renowated our house in Arnanes, starting with 4 rooms w. shared facilities on first floor with panoramic view to glaciers and mountains in Vatnajökull National Park.
In May 1996 we started our riding tours from Arnanes , 16 years later we are still going strong. The first 12 years I managed the riding tours myself but for the last 4 years my youngest son (23 years old) has been taking care of it.
In June 1997 we opened our restaurant in Arnanes with seats for 40 people. At the same time we built 3 bungalows here in Arnanes, each with 2 rooms with bath.
Since then we have not built any new houses but instead we have tried to keep everything in good shape.
From the start we have wanted our guests to get the feeling of a home away from home here in Arnanes. Sence of hospitality and friendliness, wanting to visit us again some time in future. Please contact for prices, tours and booking information.
