Hotel Klaustur is ideally located for trips to the biggest glacier in Europe – Vatnajökull, Laki Craters and Skaftafell National Park, as well as the magnificent Dyrhólaey sea arch and a boat ride on Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. At the end of an eventful day, Hotel Klaustur awaits you with an excellent restaurant and a friendly atmosphere. Places Nearby: LAKAGÍGAR (LAKI CRATERS)Lakagígar (Laki craters) is a series of craters that were formed in one of the world's largest mixed eruptions in recorded history. Now referred to as the Fires of the River Skaftá (or Laki eruption), this continuous series of eruptions emitted a vast quantity of lava and substantial amounts of volcanic ash from a fissure stretching 25 km across the area west of the ice cap. The eruption began on 8th of June 1783 at the south-west end of the fissure. Lava flowed across the flat land destroying a large number of farms, stopping just outside the small town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur on 20th of July. The north-east part of the fissure then erupted. From 29th of July until well into October, lava flowed along the course of the River Hverfisfljót and across the countryside on both banks. Although volcanic activity then began to subside, the eruption was not finally over until February 1784. The total area of the resulting lava field is 565 km² and the estimated volume of volcanic material is over 12 km³. MossesNowhere else in Iceland are mosses as prominent as in the highlands southwest of Vatnajökull ice cap. Mosses have virtually no roots and absorb rainwater and nutrients through their small leaves. They therefore have an advantage over flowering plants where precipitation is high and the ground is poor in nutrients. Walking on moss can kill it, and then it does not re-grow in the same place. Please assist us to protect the area by only walking on the marked and posted paths around the Laki crater row. How to get thereThe road to the Laki craters (F 206) leaves the main road (road nr. 1) by the farm Hunkubakkar, just south of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Distance is about 50 km, but traveling time should be estimated about 2 hrs, one way.More geosites in the neighbourhood: www.vatnajokulsthjodgardur.is   SKAFTÁRELDAHRAUN (ELDHRAUN LAVA FIELDS)  The Skaftá-Fires are one of two of the largest lava flows that have occurred on Earth in reocrded history. The lava flow, which flowed from the Laki vent, fell into two main streams to inhabited areas, on each side of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. For the eight months during the eruption, 12 km3 of basalt lava flowed onto the surface and covered about 565 km2 of land or about a half percent of Iceland’s area. Skaftá-Fires lava field is classified as smooth or pāhoehoe lava. There are a number of lava caves in the field. All around thick woolly fringe moss forms a continuous layer which gives off a grey colour when dry, but a beautiful green after rain. More geosites in the neighbourhood: www.katlageopark.com

Menam Thai Food
Menam offers delicious dishes made from fresh, quality ingredients with the influence of the Thai kitchen. By using the best possible local ingredients and cooking with the magic of Thai cuisine, the best of both worlds is brought out. Restaurant Menam was founded in 1997 and has since 1999 been owned by the same family. Menam was previously located across the street in a traditional restaurant setting but was closed in 2018. After almost three years of break and great encouragement from the locals, the Menam family decided to open a smaller version of Menam again in the beautiful building “The Old Dairy” in the new center of Selfoss.  Menam means “by the river” as it is located close to the largest river in Iceland, Ölfusá. Our stand has the appearance of a restaurant to praise our history and spirit. We respect the old values of offering fresh and tempting food, at reasonable prices in a pleasant environment that is both fun to work in and to visit. Hospitality and a good spirit have characterized Menam from the beginning and we will do our very best to keep them honored. Menam´s characteristic flower is the lotus flower which represents; purity, a new beginning, hope, and endurance. Pink lotus flowers also represent pure passion and love for life, which will be reflected in our passion for Thai cooking. The pink color also has a feminine reference that embraces the fact that Menam was originally founded and run by women - as well as the values of the Menam that was - and now is. Along with the Thai part of Menam, the family opened the first dumpling place in South Iceland - and outside the Capital Region for that matter - with a branch of Dragon Dim Sum in Reykjavik, which had been a real hit. At the beginning of 2023, it was decided to proceed under its own name, Menam Dim Sum, in continued good cooperation with Dragon Dim Sum. Menam Dim Sum offers excellent quality dumplings and side dishes made from fresh quality ingredients and served in a professional, yet fun way. We respect traditions but at the same time put our signature on the dishes. As before, our dumplings are homemade in Dragons kitchen and our specialty consists of "toppings" and a bit of homemade, tasty sauces that give them that little extra and at the same time unique taste experience. The original Chinese meaning of dim sum is to "touch the heart", which we strive to do through unique taste experiences for foodies as well as regularly introducing exciting innovations. At the time, Menam was a pioneer in bringing new trends by introducing Asian cuisine to the locals in the South, which at the time was considered very exotic. Now again, Dim Sum is the first dumpling place in the region, and Menam is therefore once again a pioneer in introducing new food and food culture in the region.
