Eruption Area in Reykjanes is Closed

For safety, the eruption area in Reykjanes has been closed. Updates are available on SafeTravel.is and Road.is.

At the request of the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management and the police in Suðurnes, the Icelandic Tourist Board wants to inform travelers that the eruption area at Reykjanes is not accessible and that no one should try to get there. Responders in the area have repeatedly encountered problems due to people not following instructions, people have been injured and great danger has been created.

Authorities have determined that the eruption area poses potential dangers.

  • Navigating the area is extremely difficult, with no established footpaths.
  • The site is a former U.S. military training ground, and hidden mines may be present.
  • Parking on roads near the eruption site is strictly prohibited.
  • Gas pollution from wildfires caused by the eruption is a significant risk.

Eruption Update: North-East of Grindavík

  • The town of Grindavík, its surrounding areas, and all nearby roads are currently closed. Please respect these closures and stay away from the area.

Road Closures:

  • Grindavíkurvegur (43) is closed to general traffic due to the volcanic eruption. It is open only for Blue Lagoon guests with valid bookings.
  • The exit ramp to Straumsvík is closed for traffic coming from the west (Keflavík direction). A detour is available via the junction of Krýsuvíkurvegur (42).
  • All roads leading to Grindavík are closed, and these closures are expected to last for several weeks.
